From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Engineering is the discipline, art and profession of acquiring and applying technical, scientific, and mathematical knowledge to design and implement materials, structures, machines, devices, systems, and processes that safely realize a desired objective or invention. The American Engineers' Council for Professional Development (ECPD, the predecessor of ABET) has defined "engineering" as:
One who practices engineering is called an engineer, and those licensed to do so may have more formal designations such as Professional Engineer, Chartered Engineer, Incorporated Engineer, or European Engineer. The broad discipline of engineering encompasses a range of more specialized subdisciplines, each with a more specific emphasis on certain fields of application and particular areas of technology. GNU Free Documentation License What engineering degree should I take and what college to accompany it? Q. I am taking up engineering. What would be some similar and beneficial majors to look at. I will probably get more than one since I am planning to run my dad's business. I'm looking at architecture, civil engineering, and electrical engineering majors. Maybe two of them. I don't know which ones are in the most demand or anything. I can also go to any college in the United States to learn these things. I'd also like to know a good college to teach me engineering. Any advice? Asked by MurtaKid - Sun Jun 28 04:40:47 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. The different engineering disciplines are different beasts. Many of the mathematical skills will be the same (calculus differentiation and integration, sometimes partial differential equations), but the laws and concepts to understand will be very different. Civil engineering deals with static (not moving) physics and strengths of materials, as well as large water systems and geological things. Beginning pay is around $40,000/yr, and there's not a particularly high demand for them. In my intro engineering class, about 60% of the students were majoring in civil engineering. Mechanical engineering deals more with dynamic physics (things that move) as well as a lot of fluid dynamics (pumps, valves and pressure, and hydraulics) and… [cont.] Answered by [0, ]f(t)e^(-st)dt = F(s) - Tue Jun 30 16:30:33 2009 How important is a mechanical engineering freshman's summer job to future employers? Q. I just finished my first year of mechanical engineering at college. There's a paid graphic arts internship that I'm interested in and can easily get. Getting a mechanical engineering-related internship or job would be much harder because I live in NYC and things are competitive. How much should I worry about getting engineering-related experience in my first summer? Asked by jaysomethin - Tue Jun 8 23:05:33 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. I am a 51-year-old mechanical engineer who had to hire, on different occasions, two experienced mechanical engineers and one right-out-of-school mechanical engineer. So I have some but not a heck of a lot of experience hiring. My two cents: Don't sweat it, take the graphic arts internship . You are too early in your studies to worry about getting an engineering summer job THIS summer. Do worry about getting an engineering summer job NEXT summer. My reasoning: 1.-No offense, but if I remember freshman year right (it's been a while) you probably haven't had the serious engineering courses that would allow you to have a serious engineering summer job freshman summer anyway. Basically, you can take the graphic arts job, be happy, not do… [cont.] Answered by Ferf - Wed Jun 9 01:05:15 2010 Will a bachelors in nanotechnology and masters in chemical engineering allow me to work as a chemical engineer?
Q. Ive done 2 years of a 4 year nanotechnology course. If I do a masters in chemical engineering which is 1.5 years long, will I be able to work as a chemical engineer afterwards? Or should i just change my course to chemical engineering now and almost start from scratch? Asked by Rob - Sun Feb 15 08:27:06 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Of course you must finish first the Chemical Engineering degree in order to be qualified to work as a Chemical Engineer. Only a plus factor for you is your nanotechnology studies, despite you have not yet completed the course. Please note that only you can be called Engineer and work as a Chemical Engineer if you have that degree, or else you will only be called laboratory technician if without finishing an engineering degree. Proceeding to Masters Degree after a Bachelors Degree will be a very good choice to ensure your place to land a better job. Good luck.
