A university is a corporation that provides both undergraduate education and postgraduate education. The word university is derived from the Latin universitas magistrorum et scholarium, roughly meaning "community of teachers and scholars." HistoryDefinitionRepresentation of a university class in the 1350sThe original Latin word "universitas" was used at the time of emergence of urban town life and medieval guilds, to describe specialized "associations of students and teachers with collective legal rights usually guaranteed by charters issued by princes, prelates, or the towns in which they were located." The original Latin word referred to degree-granting institutions of learning in Western Europe, where this form of legal organization was prevalent, and from where the institution spread around the world. For non-related educational institutions of antiquity which did not stand in the tradition of the university and to which the term is only loosely and retrospectively applied, see ancient centers of higher learning. This year I will start my degree in the U.K and some people suggested me to apply to Bristol as appears to be a nice city for students. When I was applying through UCAS I selected UWE( university of west of England) and apparently it is totally different from the University of Bristol. I would prefer University of Bristol because is one of the best universities in the universities' ranking of the United Kingdom, EWU seems to have a lower level. EWU has offer me a place in the degree I wish to do. What should I do? Asked by Frans - Sat May 8 10:08:28 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. My daughter has just done the rounds of university open days and interviews as she will start her degree this October. She has luckily been offered a place at the University of Bristol. The two universities you mention are not even on the same scale. Bristol University is seen as very, very good and is difficult to get into, the other one is way down in the rankings I'm afraid. Don't want to put a damper on your offer, but I'm just being realistic. Without knowing what other offers you have or where you have applied to, it is difficult to judge. If you have no other offers, take this one. If you have offers at higher ranking universities, take one of those. People judge you on where you went, not what you studied I'm afraid. Answered by Lizzie H-S - Sat May 8 10:54:21 2010 Is the modern University system the most practical way to train professionals like Engineers, Accountants etc? Q. Universities are expensive. It's an ethical dilemna that we have to go into 150K of debt just to try to obtain the American dream. Universities have a lot of requirements that have little to do with the jobs of accounting and engineering. In the distant (maybe not so distant) past these jobs were trained through free apprenticeships, not university, and you didn't have to start in 6 figures of debt just to try to obtain a middle class job. Asked by Daniel John - Wed Jan 20 09:55:12 2010 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. I think you are correct in that the university system is not the best way to educate many professions including engineering and accounting. In Great Britain, medical doctors are trained for the medical profession right after high school (their equivalent) and omit the courses normally required in a liberal arts education or the first two years of a University in America. If I recall they spend four years in med. school followed by two years of internship and another year or two if they are in a specialty. Therefore, they can be out and practicing medicine after six years or 23 or 24 years old or 25 or 26 with a specialty. I think accountants and engineers should spend 2 years in a school or university and another 2 years as interns… [cont.] Answered by ronald.glass@sbcglobal.net - Wed Jan 20 21:28:10 2010 How does US State university different from others?
Q. What is the differences between state uni and others? public vs private? for eg. California State University Vs University of California Can anyone clarify me how does these two uni are different from each other; which one is better? I see CSU is not in the world ranking. Anyone suggests me any renowned, relatively high ranked and cheaper (10,000$ to 20,000$) US universities for computer science, please someone advice me coz i'm planning for my further study in US. i wonder why CSUs are not in the world ranking list? Asked by Antares - Wed Jul 23 22:20:17 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. In the US there are state an private universities. State schools are funded mostly by the government. Most money comes from the actual state the school is in and these schools take a majority of kids from their own state. State schools are cheaper than private universities and colleges. Most can not afford the resources that top private schools offer. You are more likely to find very large classes at state schools. Most states have many schools in the state system of varying quality. In California, a huge state, the system is enormous. It has Ucs, it's top schools, CSUs, it's middle tier schools and community colleges. Over the years the lines have blurred, so there are some CSUs (CA state schools) which are now better/harder to get into,… [cont.] Answered by jb - Wed Jul 23 22:45:38 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "university" Another Major University Enrolls in Microsoft's Cloud - ReadWriteWeb (blog)
